The Norwich Terrier

We hope that this introduction to our breed will enable you to learn a little of the origins and the background of the Norwich Terrier.

As a Breed the Norwich Terrier evolved almost by accident partly from litters bred internationally for sale and partly from litters bred from family companions.

In the latter part of the last century, Trumpington Terriers bred from the old bigger type Yorkshire Terrier and a small Irish Terrier were sold to Cambridge undergraduates for ratting in the colleges. At this time too a small, dark Brindle Terrier bitch rather like the breed then known as the Aberdeen Terrier, but smooth coated was mated to a long coated Trumpington Terrier.

A dog puppy from this mating named Rags went to the Norwich area. He was small with a profuse but hard red coat, silky topknot and greatly resembled the Cairn Terrier. His services at stud were sought by many terrier owners in the are and if any dog can be called the progenitor of the Norwich Terrier this is the one.

His red colour always came through to his puppies, despite being mated to such different types and colours of terrier.
The small red terriers from these matings were often crossed with small red terriers indigenous to East Anglia and became so popular with terrier lovers and local sportsmen that a deliberate attempt was then made to stabilise type and this was the beginning of the Breed eventually called the Norwich Terrier.

Other crosses were used after the first World War- with a Bedlington Terrier and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and many breeders in the pre Second World War believed a Cairn Terrier was also used.

The Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1932 when two types of ear carriage were accepted. However, breeders found that crossing the two types gave an indifferent ear carriage and started breeding to each type seperately. As a result the Kennel Club decided to seperate the Norwich Terrier into two Breeds in September 1964. The prick eared type retained the name Norwich Terrier and the drop eared type was given the name Norfolk Terrier.

When the breed was recognised in 1932 by the Kennel Club, a breed Club was formed to protect and promote the interests of the Breed and this club, The Norwich Terrier Club has been in existence ever since, serving the needs of Norwich Terrier owners in the United Kingdom and in many overseas countries as well. At first the Club represented both types but in the Autumn of 1964 the Norfolk Terrier Club was formed to represent the new Breed leaving the original Club for the prick-eared or Norwich Terrier.
